Tilt-shift photography

Tilt-Shift Photography

Tiltshift photography is camera movements on DSLR and medium-format cameras. It makes a photo of a real life scene-normally taken at a high angle-and simulates it as a miniature scene. Tilt is used to control the orientation of the plane of focus hence the part of an image that appears sharp. Shift is used to adjust the position of the subject in the image area without moving the camera back; this is often helpful in avoiding the intersect parallel lines, as when photographing tall buildings.When looking at tilt-shift photography i discovered that trees, people, cars, stadiums and architecture work best and make the most effective tilt-shift scenes.
Other ideas i would like to try out are;
  • Aeroplanes
  • Trains
  • Cyclists
To create a tilt-shift image on photoshop you first need to open an image, preferably a high angle image. Next you press 'Q' on the keyboard to activate quick mask mode, then you press 'G' to enable the gradient, make sure when the gradient is activated if it is paint bucket, go to the top of the screen and select 'reflected gradient'. From here you need to draw a vertical line across a small part of your image, this will make a red band appear and this is where your focus will be.

Next you need to press 'G' again this will take away the red band and will replace it with marching ants. From this point you will need to go to the top of your screen and press 'filter' then 'blur' and finally 'lens blur' this will then show you the overall image, you can then change the radius and add or take away blur to your image.

Finally when you are happy with the radius press 'okay' and then 'cmd D' to get rid of marching ants. If you want to enhance the colour to make the image appear even more animated then you can change the hue/saturation, you can do this by pressing image, adjustments, hue/saturation. a good saturation to use is +40. Finally to give your image a polished look adjust the contrast by pressing image, adjustments, curves, you can change your contrasts here to lighter or darker tones.
